What is Chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. Chiropractors, who are healthcare professionals trained in chiropractic care, believe that these disorders can affect general health via the nervous system. The central idea behind chiropractic care is that the body has the inherent ability to heal itself when the skeletal system is properly aligned.

Chiropractors utilize a variety of different techniques to help you on your journey to optimum health.  These include:

Spinal Adjustments or Manipulation: Chiropractors commonly use hands-on spinal manipulation to restore joint mobility. The manipulation is often referred to as an “adjustment” and involves applying a controlled force to a joint in the spine or other parts of the body. The goal is to improve range of motion, alleviate pain, and promote the body’s natural healing process.

Soft Tissue Therapy: In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractors may employ various soft tissue therapies, such as massage, to address muscle tension, inflammation, and other issues affecting the musculoskeletal system.

Exercise and Rehabilitation: Chiropractors often prescribe specific exercises to help patients strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance overall physical function. Rehabilitation exercises are tailored to the individual’s condition and are intended to complement other aspects of treatment.

Lifestyle and Nutritional Counseling: Chiropractors may offer advice on lifestyle factors, including ergonomics, posture, and nutrition. They may provide guidance on making positive lifestyle changes that can contribute to overall well-being.

Patients typically visit a chiropractor for a variety of reasons which include:

  • Back Pain: Chiropractors frequently address issues such as lower back pain, upper back pain, and sciatica through spinal adjustments and other interventions.
  • Neck Pain: Neck pain and stiffness can be alleviated through chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises.
  • Headaches: Some types of headaches, particularly tension headaches and those associated with neck issues, may be treated with chiropractic care.
  • Joint Pain: Chiropractors may address joint pain related to conditions such as osteoarthritis through manipulation and other therapies.
  • Wellness care: Some patients come to the chiropractor to receive wellness care which is also known as preventive or proactive healthcare.  These patients maintain and improve overall health and well-being rather than simply addressing and treating specific illnesses or symptoms.
